    The situation in the Jordan Valley is now more serious than ever. The level of harassment of Palestinian communities by the Israeli army and settlers has been building up over the last few months. It has affected villages throughout the area, but there can be no doubt that over the last month they have been attempting to make life in Al Farisiya unendurable.

    At our meeting last week we decided to change our name to Brighton Jordan Valley Solidarity.

    This reflects the importance of working with communities in the Jordan Valley who are resisting attempts by Israel to ethnically cleanse it of Palestinians ready to claim it for themselves and the illegal settlers who already control much of the valley.

    Tomer is an illegal Israeli settlement of nearly 300 people close to the Palestinian community of Fasayil. It employs Palestinian and Thai workers, the bosses are Israeli. Tomer was established in 1976 on the lands of the people of Fasayil, Al Auja and other nearby Palestinian communities.

    In defiance of Israel's increasing harassment of Palestinian water resources in the Jordan Valley, communities have begun to use direct action to challenge the occupation force's apartheid policies. With the help of Jordan Valley Solidarity, several Bedouin communities are in the process of connecting their villages to water supplies by physically taking charge of the situation.

    Several people were arrested in Al Jiftlik on Friday 30th April after at least 60 soldiers in several military vehicles entered the area. One of those arrested, Moneer Abu aged 38, was severely beaten with rifle butts and brutally kicked in front of his wife and children. He has been arrested and the Israeli Army are refusing to state where he is being held.

    During my previous trips to the Jordan Valley I have written a lot about the settlements, but always from the perspective of staying in a Palestinian village close to them. From there, the settlements are repressive monoliths which surround most Palestinian communities and take up 95% of the water resources of the land.
