The Day the Circus Came

Amongst the dust and the chickens, beside the rumble of demolished homes, the circus came to Bedouin village of Al Hadidya in the Jordan Valley. The village of Al Hadidya has had many unwelcome visitations; the Israeli Army has come many times with soldiers and bulldozers, intent on removing the people from their land. So, despite being arranged in advance, the people of al Hadidya were a little wary when a van full of foreigners arrived.

Interviews with the people of Al Hadidya

Al Jiftlik - a Jordan Valley success story

Visiting Al Jiftlik, I met the people who had been involved in the campaign to build the tent school there. They were denied permission to build a school, so they built one out of tents. After a long and ardous struggle they won the right to have a school, and built a new school out of breezeblocks. jiflic new schooljiflic new school

Gun-shots, rocks and the emergency room in Tubas.

For the past 3 days Israeli armoured jeeps have entered Tubas in the day. The first day, I was at a house not far from the town hall making soap with the women’s group. There were shouts and whistles from the rooftops. The kids were shouting “Jaish Jaish!” (Soldiers) They looked at me expectantly. Did I want to go up to the roof with them to have a good look? I looked at the women, who shrugged and said ‘if you like but we need to make soap before its dark.’ So we made soap. There were more shouts and whistles, and the occasional gunshot. I felt terrible.
